The Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT) is a department within the Ministry with responsibility for Investment Trade and Commerce and has primary responsibility for the coordination, development and implementation of foreign trade policies. The DGFT is equally responsible for International Trade Negotiations on behalf of Belize. The Head of Department is the Director General and is supported by a team of Trade Economists who track and monitor developments in markets Belize trade in.

A National Trade Policy Framework (TPF) (link to the NTPF on the website) approved by the Cabinet in 2016 provides guidance and direction for the current work of the Department. The TPF is underpinned by the following four policy pillars:

  • Strengthening Institutional Capacity
  • Boosting the Supply Capacity
  • Expanding Market Access
  • and Trade Facilitation
