The Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT) is a department within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and has primary responsibility for the coordination, development and implementation of foreign trade policies. The DGFT is equally responsible for International Trade Negotiations on behalf of Belize. The Head of Department is the Director General and is supported by a team of Trade Economists who track and monitor developments in markets Belize trade in.

A National Trade Policy (2019-2030), approved by the Cabinet, provides guidance and direction for the current work of the Department. The trade policy is underpinned by the following four policy pillars:

  • Strengthening Institutional Capacity
  • Boosting the Supply Capacity
  • Expanding Market Access
  • and Trade Facilitation

To foster sustainable and inclusive economic development through a responsive trade policy that stimulates trade, enables investment and facilitates Belize’s integration into the multilateral trading system.
